Lab 8

Sandstone canyon jumping looks exhilarating and death defyingly fun. Its amazing to see how strong the sandstone pillars are to have bodies launched and held by a bungee rope. The amount of strength held in the sedimentary rock formations shows how time has made its impact.

Community Garden: What do they mean to us?

The benefits of the community garden are truly extensive. If done correctly, it can make the community a brighter and more unified place. It has been proven that community gardens bring neighbors together, as well as, improve the overall scenery in the community. A community garden can serve as the bridge between people of various races, cultures, and other factors. It can also serve as an effective crime prevention strategy.

Lab 5

During the summer, I frequently like to travel and see my friends. Unfortunately, none of my friends live in the same city with me. This is the path between my house in Lithonia, GA to my best friend's house in Carrollton, GA.

HW #4

Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents

Hydrothermal vents are like geysers, or hot springs, on the ocean floor. Along mid-ocean ridges where tectonic plates spread apart, magma rises and cools to form new crust and volcanic mountain chains. Seawater circulates deep in the ocean’s crust and becomes super-heated by hot magma. As pressure builds and the seawater warms, it begins to dissolve minerals and rise toward the surface of the crust. The hot, mineral-rich waters then exit the oceanic crust and mix with the cool seawater above. As the vent minerals cool and solidify into mineral deposits, they form different types of hydrothermal vent structures.

Environmental Adaptation

The animals in this ecosystem come as a shock to most. The wildlife survives on chemical energy instead of sunlight which is the reason for the lack of pigmentation in most animals at this depth.

HW #3

Beryl Be3Al2SiO6
Small Emerald Crystal
In the picture above is an example of emerald, a variation of beryl. The light green form of Beryl is not recognized as Emerald, but rather Green Beryl. The deep color of Emerald is caused by traces of the element chromium, but sometimes also vanadium. Emerald often crystallizes in perfect, six-sided hexagons. Crystals are usually as individual prismatic hexagons.Click for more info for more on emeralds

Jadeite NaAlSi2O6
Waterworn Jadeite Nugget

Jadeite is mostly known for the gem version known as Jade. Jadeite is not the only form of Jade; the amphibole mineral Nephrite (a variety of Actinolite) also has a gem form of Jade. They are very much similar but different indeed. Jadeite is the rarer of the two. Click to find out more on Jadeite,
